Laser Hair Removal Q & A
What is laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal is an increasingly popular way to enjoy skin without excessive body hair, razor bumps, or thick and prickly stubble. Many people shave or wax their body hair, but these procedures are just temporary solutions and often come with complications like razor burn, ingrown hairs, and prompt regrowth.
Modern NewSkin offers laser hair removal using the Candela™ GentleMax Pro® laser. This laser has multiple settings with various light wavelengths to safely treat a wide range of skin tones and types.
Before your treatment, your provider applies a topical numbing agent to your skin to make sure you’re comfortable as they treat your body hair. The pigment within your body hair absorbs the heat from the laser, which damages the follicle so that it can no longer effectively grow.
The treatment delays future hair growth and usually makes new hair growth finer and lighter. You’ll probably need more than one session to get your desired results.
Can laser hair removal remove the hair from any part of my body?
Laser hair removal is effective on any part of your body that you normally shave, wax, or tweeze. During your consultation, you should specify the area or areas you’d like to target, so your provider can plan the treatment effectively. You can target your:
- Bikini area
- Chin and jaw
Your provider might dissuade you from getting laser hair removal for your eyebrows or anywhere else in close proximity to your eyes. This is because the heat from the laser can cause serious damage to them if you aren’t careful.
Am I a good candidate for laser hair removal?
Before you commit to a series of laser hair removal sessions, you should sit down with one of the experienced providers at Modern NewSkin to discuss your health, skin type, and goals. They make sure the treatment is safe for you and won’t cause irreparable skin damage or harmful side effects because of certain circumstances. Laser hair removal is a safe option for you if you:
- Are at least 16 years old
- Have no open wounds
- Have no rashes or skin infections
- Have body hair that is darker in color than your skin
- Can commit to multiple initial treatment sessions
- Are not pregnant or breastfeeding
Before you start a session, you should shave at least 24 hours in advance and minimize exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. Your provider tells you how many initial treatments you’ll need to book to remove your body hair in the targeted areas. After your initial series, you can return for laser hair removal as needed if or when your hair eventually grows back.
